Daisuke Kawai, Deputy Director of the Economic Security Research Program (ESRP), commented in the AFP article “Japan Responds Coolly To N.Korea Comments On Better Ties,” pointing out a “clear misalignment” between Japan and North Korea regarding the abduction issue. He stated that Japan currently has nothing to offer that would meet North Korea’s expectations for compensation, and without significant concessions, there is no satisfactory solution.
