Daisuke Kawai, Deputy Director of ESRP, has published a paper titled “Japan’s New Security: Balancing Tradition with Reality” on the website of the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI).
In the paper, he examines the transition from the Kishida administration to the Ishiba administration. He notes that Prime Minister Ishiba possesses a deep knowledge of security issues and argues that while the “Free and Open Indo-Pacific” concept of the Kishida administration will be maintained, there may be some changes in Japan’s foreign and security policy under Ishiba administration, including the “Asian version of NATO” concept and the revision of the Status of Forces Agreement between Japan and the United States.
