A comment from Akira Igata, the Director of ESRP, was published in the Asahi Shimbun on August 4, 2023. In response to U.S. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan, he pointed out that while China does not desire war, it is likely to employ non-military measures such as economic coercion to demonstrate that its criticisms are not merely lip service. He also emphasized that Japan should actively pursue value-based diplomacy.
