The “NATO-Japan Symposium 2023: Emerging Security Challenges” was co-hosted by the Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology at the University of Tokyo, NATO, the Delegation of the European Union to Japan and Danish Embassy in China and Japan was featured in the evening edition of the Asahi Shimbun (05.12.2023).
The symposium’s theme was not “security” in the narrow sense of the word, but rather security in the new era, in areas such as the economy, cyber, and disinformation, etc. The symposium was described as “unusual” because it was held at the University of Tokyo, with the participation of NATO, a military organization, in the symposium although in this university severe protesting movement of radical left-wing students took place half a century ago. The article also argued that universities should be the ones to proactively discuss the relationship between “economic security and universities.
