Akira Igata, Director of ESRP, Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology, The University of Tokyo, spoke at the “EU-Japan cooperation on economic security: Parallel paths, shared problems” the symposium held in Brussels (11/03/2024).

During the symposium, he commented on the nature of international cooperation, including the importance of developing multilateral foreign investment regulations to avoid investing in technologies of countries of particular concern, and the need to develop a platform for the public and private sectors in Japan and Europe to exchange views to deepen their understanding of each other’s government trends and regulations.

In-person Policy Dialogue | 11 March 2024 Japan stands out among the G7 economies as an economic security pioneer. The EU’s economic security strategy echoes Japan’s approach – an alignment that is further strengthened by joint initiatives on semiconductors, raw materials, and data sharing. But key questions remain for both sides.
