The Cellular Agriculture Research Organisation, of which Megumi Avigail Yoshitomi , ESRP Visiting Researcher at the University of Tokyo’s Institute for Advanced Study, is President, has recommended that the Government accelerate the establishment of rules on cultured meat and other cell-based foods. A report on the proposal was also published in The Nikkei (21/10/2024).
The proposal specifically called for stronger public-private partnerships in the field of cellular foods and recommended the establishment of individual consultation services and clarification of legal procedures. This is intended to speed up Japan’s food safety response measures and improve its international competitiveness. She also argued that it is now necessary to ensure the safety of cellular food products as they become more widespread and to look at the technological and social impact of such products. She also claimed that Japan’s technology and its characteristics as a ‘country of gastronomy’ should be utilized to develop regulations for the future.
