Megumi Avigail Yoshitomi, ESRP Visiting Researcher at the Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology, The University of Tokyo, spoke at the ‘FY2023 Tokyo University of Agriculture Research Institute “Food Safety and Security Subcommittee” 6th Symposium – How to Consider the Safety of Newly Developed Foods’ (01/12/2023).
[Session title]
Current status of cellular food development and safety assessment.
[Summary of Discussion]
Cellular agriculture is attracting attention as a response to future food resource shortages, but in Japan, rapid progress in rule formation and discussion is needed. In particular, the importance of establishing a forum for cooperation and information sharing between companies and the government with regard to the safety and quality control of cellular food products has been pointed out. Internationally, the development of cellular food products has progressed and sales have begun in Singapore and the USA, but there is also a need to develop policies in Japan to promote their widespread use while keeping social concerns at bay.
